Apologies for the late reply, but some quick thoughts. I've read both the original and the "retold" version. I enjoyed the story either way. Lots of great ideas for a dying earth RPG.

I'd also suggest Awake in the Night Land by John C. Wright, which is a story collection based in that g: Sordellos. No book is better for introducing children ages 6 to 9 to legendary historical figures than this collection of stories admirably retold by James Baldwin at the beginning of the last century.
